Participates in Beijing is a significant gathering to mark the upcoming 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, MUKTI’s representatives, Ms. Nandita Jayraman and Ms. Sonamon Basu, joined a two-day consultation held at Seva Kendra in Kolkata on January 28-29, 2025. This consultation, part of Participates in Beijing +30 India Civil Society Organizations (CSO) review process, aimed to address the pressing gender equality challenges faced by communities in India’s eastern states.
The consultation brought together a diverse group of stakeholders from West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand, and Bihar, who shared insights and experiences related to gender justice in the region. The primary objective was to identify key challenges and formulate actionable recommendations to push forward the gender equality agenda. These regional inputs are expected to contribute to the broader national review process, ensuring that grassroots voices from the eastern states are amplified in national and global discussions.
As the world prepares to commemorate 30 years since the adoption of the Beijing Declaration at the Fourth World Conference on Women in 1995, the consultation highlighted the importance of revisiting the promises made under the Beijing Platform for Action. This platform remains central to the global women’s rights agenda, outlining critical areas for action, including women’s health, education, and economic participation, as well as the elimination of violence against women and girls. MUKTI Participates in Beijing +30 milestone presents an opportunity to reflect on the progress achieved, the challenges that persist, and the future direction for achieving gender equality.
For India, this anniversary is a pivotal moment to assess how far the country has come in fulfilling its commitments, especially in the eastern region. The region, known for its unique cultural and socio-political dynamics, has long faced challenges in addressing gender inequality, women’s empowerment, and the rights of gender-diverse individuals.
