Strengthening Community Healthcare Through Cancer Awareness and Screening

On 26 September, Mukti’s Urban Project, with support from HCG Cancer Hospital, organised a Breast and Other Cancer Awareness and Dental Camp at Machuabazar, Bidhannagar, Kolkata. The initiative aimed to bring essential health awareness, screening, and medical guidance closer to women in the community.

A total of 47 women attended the camp and received medical consultations and screening services. A female Radiation Oncologist from HCG provided consultations focusing on cancers affecting women, while the nursing team conducted breast screening using diagnostic equipment.

Women whose screenings indicated findings requiring further attention were advised to undergo additional evaluation and, where necessary, treatment at HCG. Support through Swasthya Sathi or Ayushman Bharat, where applicable, was also discussed to help make further healthcare services more accessible.

Alongside cancer awareness and screening, dental check-ups were provided to the participants, making the camp a more comprehensive community health initiative.

Exploring Continued Healthcare Support

Following the camp, discussions were held with Mr. Manash Chakraborty, HCG Coordinator; Sonamon Basu, Programme Head – Health; and Ms. Mousumi Gupta, Programme Head – Mukti Urban Project, to explore opportunities for continued healthcare support for underserved communities.

The discussions included the possibility of introducing monthly free oncology consultations in the area, providing affordable diagnostic tests for people in need, and establishing a community-based oncology clinic.

HCG also expressed interest in extending its support and exploring further areas of collaboration with Mukti, beyond medical consultations and across other community-focused programmes.

Through such partnerships, Mukti aims to strengthen access to awareness, early screening, timely medical guidance, and affordable healthcare services, particularly for communities that may otherwise face barriers to accessing specialised care.
