As part of its commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable rural development, Mukti has undertaken the rejuvenation of a community pond at Dhakir Mukh Burning Ghat under the Mukti Bio Village initiative in Kankandighi Gram Panchayat. The project is being implemented with the generous support of Primarc and aims to restore an important community water resource that has long served the local population.
Water bodies such as ponds are the lifeline of rural communities, particularly in ecologically vulnerable regions like the Sundarbans. Over time, many traditional ponds lose their capacity to store water due to siltation, neglect, and changing environmental conditions. Rejuvenating these water bodies is essential not only for improving water availability but also for strengthening the resilience of communities against the growing impacts of climate change.
The ongoing restoration work focuses on enhancing the pond’s water-holding capacity, enabling it to function more effectively as a source of groundwater recharge and a dependable community asset. Once rejuvenated, the pond will continue to support the daily needs of local residents, particularly farmers who rely on it for agricultural activities. Improved water storage will contribute to better irrigation, promote sustainable farming practices, and help ensure water availability during drier months.
This initiative forms part of a broader plan to rejuvenate three community ponds under the Mukti Bio Village programme. Work on the first pond is currently in progress, laying the foundation for similar restoration activities at the remaining two sites. Together, these interventions are expected to enhance local water security while supporting the livelihoods of farming communities.
Beyond improving access to water, pond rejuvenation contributes significantly to environmental sustainability. Healthy water bodies help replenish groundwater, support local biodiversity, improve soil moisture, and create healthier ecosystems. By restoring these traditional resources, the project promotes a balanced relationship between communities and the natural environment while encouraging the sustainable use of local resources.
Through the Mukti Bio Village initiative, Mukti continues to promote nature-based solutions that address environmental challenges while improving the quality of life in rural communities.
