Mukti Replanted Mangrove Saplings On the Occasion of World Mangrove Day, 2021

Monday 26^th July, 2021 was the 6^th anniversary of “International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem”. On that day Mukti organized the re-plantation of the Mangrove saplings, which were destroyed by Yaas, beside the river Thakurain at Purba Sridharpur under Nagendrapur GP.

In the year, 2015, the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem was adopted by the General Conference of UNESCO. On 26th July, each year, the above day is celebrated in order to raise awareness of the importance of mangroves in a unique, special and vulnerable ecosystem.

In order to make the Sundarbans more beautiful and green, Mukti with “United Way India” jointly took the initiative.

We are thankful to “United Way India” for helping us to restore the unique ecosystem of Sundarban.

The objective of the program is

1. To raise awareness of the importance of mangrove ecosystems as a unique, special and vulnerable ecosystem and to promote solutions for their sustainable management, conservation and uses.
2. Mangroves can protect Sundarban from storm surges and rising sea levels.
3. Mangroves can support or conserve rich biodiversity, since they provide nursery habitat, spawning grounds and nutrients for a variety of fish, shellfish, migratory birds, and insects as well as countless endangered mammals, reptiles, and amphibians.
4. Mangroves are also an important tool to fight against climate change caused by global warming.

25 local women participated in the plantation program. 100 Mangrove saplings were re-planted on that day. Mukti has aimed to plant ….Mangrove saplings in the coming days. The plantation program continued from 3 PM to 4:30 PM.

The whole program was conducted by the social reformer and Mukti volunteer Mr. Chittaranjan Halder. While describing the importance of the day he said, “I am a Mukti volunteer and a resident of Purba Sridharpur Purba Para. Our President Mr. Sankar Halder with the help of the local residents is trying to protect the environment from global warming by planting trees. You can see we are standing on the river embankment of river Thakurain. Every year the river overflows our lands with saline water and damages our crops, ponds and houses. So, we decided to plant and restore Mangrove saplings on the river bank to create a Mangrove forest. The forest not only will protect us from the flood but also will help to save the environment. On behalf of Mukti, I am requesting the Government to support us so that jointly we can create a consummate Mangrove forestry.”

Mukti started the Mangrove Plantation program from the very day. The program will continue throughout the year.
