Mukti Inspires Young Minds Through Hands-on Learning on Soil Health and Sustainable Agriculture

As part of its ongoing efforts to promote sustainable agriculture and environmental awareness among young learners, Mukti’s Agriculture Team, led by Mr. Sourav Kayal, conducted a series of practical sessions on “Soil Composition and the Importance of Organic Matter in Agriculture” for students of Classes VII–IX at two Mukti Support School (MSS) centres in Kankandighi during June and July 2026.

Designed to complement classroom learning with practical experience, the sessions introduced students to the fundamental components of healthy soil through live demonstrations. They learned about the ideal composition of soil—45% minerals, 25% water, 25% air, and 5% organic matter—and gained a deeper understanding of the vital role that organic matter plays in maintaining soil fertility, supporting plant growth, and ensuring sustainable agricultural practices.

Many students shared that while they had previously studied these concepts in their textbooks, the practical demonstrations made the subject much easier to understand and relate to. The interactive nature of the sessions encouraged curiosity and enabled students to connect scientific knowledge with real-life agricultural practices.

The initiative was jointly facilitated by Mukti’s Agriculture Team and the Mukti Support School (MSS) Team with the broader objective of promoting awareness about organic farming, organic food, and medicinal plants. Beyond scientific learning, the programme sought to nurture respect for agriculture, encourage students to value farming as an essential livelihood, and inspire them to adopt environmentally responsible practices that support chemical-free food production and sustainable living.

On 18 July 2026, the initiative concluded with the distribution of gardening kits to all participating students in the presence of MSS Project Coordinator Mr. Bimal Khan and Integrated Development Project team members Mr. Pintu Halder and Mr. Gour Halder. The gardening kits were provided to encourage students to apply their newly acquired knowledge through hands-on gardening and develop a closer connection with nature and sustainable cultivation practices.

Through initiatives like these, Mukti continues to bridge the gap between classroom education and practical learning, empowering students with knowledge, skills, and values that contribute to environmental stewardship and sustainable agriculture. By nurturing awareness from an early age, the organisation hopes to inspire the next generation to become informed, responsible, and environmentally conscious citizens.
