Bettiah, West Champaran, Bihar | October 2026
In response to the severe floods that disrupted lives and livelihoods across Bihar’s West Champaran district, MUKTI, with the CSR support of Coal India Limited (CIL), undertook a humanitarian relief initiative aimed at supporting 3,500 flood-affected families. Centred around Bettiah and the surrounding flood-affected regions, the initiative sought to provide essential assistance to households struggling in the aftermath of the disaster. As part of the relief operation, 35 vehicles carrying essential supplies were dispatched towards affected areas.
Heavy rainfall in the Nepal catchment and rising water levels in the Gandak River system had caused widespread flooding across several parts of West Champaran. Homes were inundated, access roads were disrupted, and many families faced shortages of food, clothing, and basic household necessities. Recognising the urgency of the situation, the relief initiative was designed to address immediate needs while providing additional support to vulnerable households.
The intervention brought together two complementary relief packages, planned to support 3,500 households. The supplies included essential food items such as rice, wheat flour, pulses, potatoes, onions, mustard oil, sugar, salt, sattu, flattened rice, biscuits, rusk, tea, and cooking spices. Special attention was given to children’s nutritional needs through provisions such as milk powder and malted nutritional drinks.
Beyond food assistance, the initiative also addressed shelter, clothing, and hygiene requirements. Tarpaulins were included to provide temporary protection for families whose homes had been damaged or affected by floodwater, while sarees, dhotis, towels, and gamchas were arranged to meet basic clothing needs. Hygiene and household essentials included handwash, bathing and washing soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, sanitary napkins, baby diapers, baby soap, mosquito repellent, oral rehydration salts (ORS), ointments, candles, and matchboxes.
The relief efforts were planned across flood-affected locations in West Champaran, including Bagaha, Yogapatti, Nautan, Bairia, Valmikinagar, Chakardaha, and settlements across the Gandak River. Distribution planning prioritised families facing severe hardship, particularly those with damaged homes, young children, elderly members, persons with disabilities, and limited means of livelihood. Relief materials were organised according to household requirements, recognising that different families required different forms of support.
The initiative involved coordination with local authorities and community representatives to identify affected households, facilitate transportation, and support the organised distribution of relief materials. The objective was to ensure that assistance reached families facing the greatest difficulties while complementing existing relief efforts.
For households coping with damaged homes, interrupted livelihoods, and uncertainty over their immediate future, access to food, temporary shelter materials, and everyday essentials can provide much-needed relief and stability. The collaboration between Coal India Limited and MUKTI reflects the importance of bringing together institutional resources and grassroots experience to respond to humanitarian emergencies.
Through this initiative, MUKTI continues to stand beside communities during times of crisis, guided by its commitment to dignity, compassion, and collective responsibility. The flood relief efforts in Bettiah and the wider West Champaran district represent a shared endeavour to help affected families navigate the immediate challenges of the floods and begin their journey towards recovery.
