Reinforcing its commitment to improving the quality of education through innovative teaching practices, Mukti organised a Practical STEM Education Workshop for teachers from 13 Mukti Support Schools (MSS) in the Patharpratima Cluster of the Sundarbans, South 24 Parganas. The workshop brought together 65 teachers with the objective of demonstrating how meaningful STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education can be introduced in classrooms without the need for expensive laboratories or sophisticated infrastructure.
The training challenged the common perception that STEM education requires significant financial investment. Instead, it showcased how simple pedagogical changes and hands-on activities using everyday, locally available materials can make science and mathematics more engaging, practical, and enjoyable for students.
The workshop commenced with a baseline group activity, followed by participatory discussions and a series of experiential learning exercises based on real-life situations. Teachers actively participated in each activity, shared their classroom experiences, and explored ways to adapt these practical methods for students from Classes V to X. The programme concluded with an endline group survey, completed collaboratively by all participants to reflect on their learning and the effectiveness of the training.
Throughout the workshop, emphasis was placed on creating interactive and activity-based classrooms that encourage curiosity, critical thinking, problem-solving, and scientific inquiry. The practical demonstrations illustrated how STEM concepts can be taught effectively through simple experiments and collaborative learning, making lessons more relatable and helping students develop a stronger interest in learning while encouraging regular attendance at Mukti Support Schools.
The participating teachers appreciated the hands-on approach and expressed confidence that these practical STEM methodologies would enrich their classroom practices. They observed that integrating such activities into regular lessons would not only improve students’ conceptual understanding but also foster creativity, analytical thinking, and greater classroom participation.
The successful organisation of the workshop was made possible through the dedicated coordination of Field Coordinator Mr. Biswajit Chakraborty and Project Coordinator Mr. Purnabrata Karan, whose efforts ensured smooth implementation across all MSS centres in the Patharpratima Cluster.
Through initiatives like this, Mukti continues to strengthen the capacities of teachers and promote innovative, inclusive, and experiential learning approaches that make quality STEM education accessible to students, regardless of resource constraints. By empowering educators with practical teaching tools, the organisation is helping create classrooms that inspire curiosity, nurture scientific thinking, and prepare young learners for the challenges of the future.
