Skill development in India is a critical national imperative designed to bridge the gap between traditional education and the evolving demands of the modern job market. Despite completing formal education, only 50% of graduates are employable due to a lack of industry-specific skills . Despite the large pool of young talent, the country faces a significant challenge in terms of skill mismatch and the employability of its workforce. Skill development, therefore, becomes crucial not just for individual empowerment, but for the overall economic growth of the nation.
Youth are the driving force behind every nation’s progress. The age group of 18 to 25 years represents a crucial phase in life when young people transition from education to employment and begin shaping their future. In today’s rapidly evolving world, academic qualifications alone are no longer sufficient. Success depends on a combination of knowledge, practical skills, confidence, adaptability, and the ability to meet the demands of a competitive job market.
For adolescents and young adults, skill development plays a transformative role. It equips them with technical competencies, communication skills, digital literacy, problem-solving abilities, teamwork, professional etiquette, and self-confidence. These essential life and employability skills not only enhance career prospects but also enable young people to become independent, responsible, and productive members of society.
However, the absence of these skills often creates significant barriers. Many rural youth struggle to compete with their urban youth who generally have greater access to quality training and exposure. As a result, talented young people from rural communities frequently miss employment opportunities, experience low self-esteem, and face the challenges of unemployment and economic insecurity—not because they lack potential, but because they lack access to the right opportunities and skill-building platforms.
Recognizing this gap, SURYA (Supporting Unemployed Rural Youth Accomplishing their Goal) was established as a dedicated initiative of MUKTI to empower rural adolescents and young adults through structured skill development. Over the past five years the programme has been successfully conducted at the SURYA Centre in Raidighi creating opportunities for youth between the ages of 18 and 25 to develop industry-relevant skills and prepare themselves for meaningful employment and entrepreneurship.
The programme combines practical learning with personal development, enabling participants to build confidence, improve communication, strengthen digital capabilities, and enhance their overall employability. More importantly, it inspires young people to believe in their own potential and encourages them to dream beyond traditional limitations.
The success of the SURYA programme over the last five years stands as a testament to the power of skill development in transforming lives. Many participants have become more confident, career-ready, and better equipped to pursue sustainable livelihoods. Their journeys reflect the importance of investing in rural youth and providing them with opportunities that bridge the gap between education and employment.
