On the evening of 9th May 2025, the tranquil banks of the Mani River in Purba Sridharpur, Raidighi, transformed into a stage for powerful expression and community engagement. In a unique convergence of folklore and social commentary, “Behula Ekhon”, a socially conscious theatre production, was brought to life under the direction of renowned theatre personality Shri Soumitra Mitra.
Presented with the collaborative support of Mukti and Purbo-Pashchim, this contemporary reimagining of the traditional Manasamangal epic explored urgent social realities—ranging from the conflict between superstition and modern healthcare, to women’s rights, inflation, and the ongoing journey of rural empowerment.
What made “Behula Ekhon” truly special was its cast—not trained actors, but local villagers: farmers, fishers, honey collectors, and homemakers. Their heartfelt performances reflected the depth of their own lived experiences, making the play not only compelling but also deeply relatable for the audience.
✨ “Doing something meaningful for the people is the greatest reward,” shared Shri Soumitra Mitra, whose vision and leadership gave voice to community concerns through the powerful medium of theatre.
“Behula Ekhon” is more than just a play. It is part of Mukti’s continuing effort to amplify community voices, promote awareness through cultural engagement, and empower grassroots change in the Sundarbans.
