01. Why the project is?

People with visual impairment face significant challenges in attaining education parity with other students, and access to books remains one of the top challenges along with limited pool of ‘writer’ to help during standard examination. With India having highest disability rates (2.2%) among entire population and lowest literacy rate, there has been no systematic support for these students in their education journey. Braille books remains expensive and limited, and audio books are hard to find – causing significant challenges in learning.

02. What the project is?

The vision of this project is to provide visually impaired students with access to educational resources that are equal to those of their sighted peers. Audiobooks can help to level the playing field by providing these students with the ability to learn and grow at their own pace. By providing audiobooks for visually impaired students, we can help them to achieve their full potential and reach their dreams

03. How the project is?

The Guma Prerana Audio Library is a volunteer-driven organization that takes this challenge heads on with limited resources. Spearheaded by highly educated but visually impaired from birth, Mr. Tarak Chandra, the organization creates audiobooks to support visually impaired students. The organization’s goal is to revolutionize the education for visually impaired students and provide them with more study materials.
With volunteer support, along with monetary & logistical support from Baybasi Inc (US based Bengali Organization) and Mukti US &India, Guma Prerana Audio Library, India has grown sustainably and effectively in last two years. The library has already recorded more than 200 audiobooks, benefiting hundreds of students. The library is supported by 20 readers compensated monetarily, and about 10 unpaid volunteers, and has helped 600+ students so far.

05. What the impact is?
