Books, Bytes, and Beyond: The Sahara GP Library Initiative

In August 2023, Mukti and “Chhaya Prakasani” joined forces to establish a much-needed library and computer center in Sahara GP, within Purba Medinipur district’s Egra Block. Mr. Arindam Paul – the Associate Marketing Manager of “Chhaya Prakasani” –formally inaugurated the library on 8^th September 2023 in the presence of around 35 attendees, including members of the Mukti Community Development Fund (MCDF), teachers and students of Mukti Support Schools (MSS) and Kishalaya schools, Mukti staff, and a group of volunteers.

Before this initiative, the nearest library was 40-45 kilometers away. However, Mukti’s call to action inspired 60-70 locals to donate books, and the center now boasts over 200 books, covering school syllabus materials, storybooks, mythological texts, renowned authors’ works, competitive exam resources, and more. In addition, it offers chess and various other intellectual games, promoting holistic learning. The center also houses two well-equipped computers, benefiting students from classes VI to VIII who can practice their computer curriculum for a nominal fee of Rs. 50 per month. The weekends are reserved for school students, while MCDF members utilize the facility on other days. This initiative has notably reduced the need for students to travel long distances to access computers.

Mr. Paul lauded Mukti’s efforts in making education accessible in the far-flung corners of Purba Midnapore and gave an assurance that Chhaya Prakashani would play an integral role in enhancing the Mukti Library’s resources. With this promise, Mukti looks forward to a lasting synergy between the two organizations toward the cause of education for the underserved.
