During the last seven days, more than 250 villagers are working to build a new river embankment (ring Bandh) at Damkal Ganga ghat of Nagendrapur GP in Mathurapur – II block. Original embankment was completely washed out by Aila flood and hence it is not possible to rebuild in its original location.
Local GP decided to move the embankment by 15 acres from its current location resulting in loss of agricultural lands for many people. This will be considered as the new river bed from now on.
Cyclone Aila, which already displaced thousands of people now impacting future livelihood of these people.
Mukti’s ‘Work for Food’ program has been successfully used for the implementation of this 1.5 km embankment building project. The workers are receiving Rice, Dal and Potato from Mukti, while the Government will provide their wages at a later date.
