MUKTI successfully completed Phase II of chicks distribution under Project NIRMAN at the Jharmatiali Field Office in Lataguri, West Bengal, on 3 October 2026, taking another step towards strengthening livelihood opportunities and collective action among women in the region.
Following the distribution of approximately 3,000 chicks during the first phase, the remaining 2,000 chicks were distributed among 200 women beneficiaries during the second phase. The distribution commenced at 8:00 AM, with women from different villages gathering at the field office to participate in the initiative.
With the completion of Phase II, approximately 5,000 chicks have now been distributed across the two phases under the initiative.
The activity went beyond the distribution of chicks. Participating women received practical orientation on the scientific process of chick rearing, helping them understand the practices necessary for better care and management.
The orientation covered appropriate brooding and shelter arrangements, feeding practices, and basic care of chicks. By combining livelihood inputs with practical knowledge, the initiative aims to help women develop the skills required to manage poultry rearing more effectively and strengthen its potential as a source of livelihood.
The session also introduced and reinforced the importance of Self-Help Groups (SHGs), regular savings, and collective participation.
Women were encouraged to understand savings not simply as an individual financial practice but as a means of building greater financial resilience, mutual support, and collective action within their communities.
Approximately 200 women from villages including Moulani, Panbari, Ramsai, Basusuba, Bherberi Para, and Jharmatiali participated in the activity, creating an opportunity for them to engage more closely with MUKTI’s ongoing development initiatives in the Lataguri region.
A significant outcome of the day was the formation of four new Self-Help Groups under MUKTI Swanirbhar Goshti, Lataguri.
With these additions, the total number of SHGs formed under the initiative has increased from 17 to 21. Several other potential members were also identified, opening possibilities for the formation of additional groups in the future.
The growing network of SHGs is intended to provide women with a platform for regular savings, collective participation, mutual support, and livelihood development, while encouraging greater involvement in community-led initiatives.
The successful completion of Phase II reflects MUKTI’s continued efforts to combine livelihood opportunities, capacity building, savings practices, and women’s collective action as interconnected elements of community development.
Through Project NIRMAN, supported by Canara Bank, MUKTI continues to work with women and communities in the Lataguri region to strengthen livelihood opportunities and encourage greater financial resilience and community participation.
The completion of the chicks distribution is therefore not only about providing a livelihood input—it represents another step towards enabling women to build skills, organise collectively, strengthen savings habits, and participate more actively in their own economic and community development.
