Exploring Integrated Development Opportunities in Jhargram Block

Engaging with local administration, schools and communities to understand priorities in education, health, livelihoods and community development

As part of a two-day field visit to Jhargram, Mr. Sankar Halder, Founder-President of MUKTI, visited several villages and areas across Jhargram Block, engaging with the Block administration, local communities, school heads, teachers and students to gain a deeper understanding of local needs and development priorities.

The visit focused on understanding ground-level realities related to education, health, agriculture, livelihoods and overall quality of life, while exploring areas where need-based and integrated interventions could potentially be developed in the future.

Dialogue with the BDO on Integrated Development

An important part of the visit was a detailed discussion with the Block Development Officer (BDO), Jhargram Block, covering education, health, livelihoods and the socio-economic development of local communities.

The conversation explored opportunities to strengthen livelihoods through agriculture, livestock rearing and other locally relevant livelihood activities. Discussions also considered how community-based interventions could contribute to improving household incomes and enhancing the overall quality of life of families in the region.

The interaction provided valuable administrative perspectives on local priorities and helped identify areas where coordinated efforts could potentially create meaningful and sustainable impact.

MSS Visit: Understanding Educational Needs

During the field visit, Mr. Sankar Halder also visited a Mukti Support School (MSS), where he interacted with students and teachers to understand their experiences and educational needs.

Discussions focused on school attendance, continuity of learning, the overall learning environment and opportunities to further strengthen the quality of education available to children.

School infrastructure and existing facilities were also reviewed, with discussions around areas that could be strengthened to create a safer, more supportive and effective learning environment. Teachers and other stakeholders shared their experiences from the field, highlighting challenges as well as possible solutions.

Listening to Teachers and School Leaders

Interactions with Head Teachers and teachers from schools in Jhargram and adjoining areas provided further insights into the realities affecting children’s education.

The discussions covered educational needs, attendance and continuity, challenges faced by schools and teachers, and the ways in which local socio-economic conditions can influence children’s learning.

Teachers shared their practical experiences and perspectives on possible solutions. The conversations also explored potential future initiatives related to education, health, child development and community-based development, based on the needs identified at the local level.

Understanding Communities and Livelihoods

Direct engagement with community members across different villages formed another important part of the visit. These conversations helped build a broader understanding of living conditions, livelihood opportunities, agricultural practices, livestock rearing, health concerns, educational needs and other local development priorities.

Listening directly to community members provided valuable perspectives on the challenges families experience as well as the resources, practices and opportunities already present within their communities.

Towards Need-Based and Integrated Interventions

The two-day visit created an important platform for dialogue among local administration, educational institutions and communities, helping develop a more comprehensive understanding of Jhargram Block’s development priorities.

The insights gathered through these interactions will contribute to identifying potential areas for need-based, locally relevant and integrated interventions across education, health, agriculture, livestock, livelihoods and broader community development.

By beginning with dialogue and an understanding of realities on the ground, MUKTI aims to explore interventions that respond to the priorities of communities and contribute to sustainable improvements in their quality of life.
