MUKTI Responds to Flood Crisis in Egra with Safe Drinking Water and Dry Food Support

For hundreds of families in Sahara Gram Panchayat, Egra-I Block, Purba Medinipur, the recent flood was not only about water entering their homes. It also meant losing access to something as basic as safe drinking water and food.

In the villages of Chakmurari, Sahara Pallishree, Alipur and Sahara, floodwater entered houses and submerged local tube wells, leaving nearly 750–800 families in difficult conditions. As the water level continued to rise, access to clean drinking water became increasingly scarce. The situation also brought additional risks, including incidents of snakebite in the affected areas.

In response, MUKTI’s Egra Unit and MUKTI Sathi volunteers stepped forward to support the affected communities.

On 22 August 2026, volunteers gathered at Gopinathpur and travelled together to the flood-affected villages. They distributed dry food to families and students who had been struggling amid the waterlogging.

But one need stood out above everything else — drinking water.

With tube wells submerged and many households surrounded by floodwater, MUKTI began supplying 20-litre drums of safe drinking water. In places that could not be reached by road, volunteers worked with the local administration to carry the water by boat directly to affected families.

By 22nd August, around 200 drums of drinking water had already been delivered.

For a family surrounded by floodwater, a drum of safe water is more than relief — it means something to drink, something to cook with, and one less uncertainty to face that day.

The situation remains challenging, and the need for safe water and essential food supplies continues in the affected villages. MUKTI remains committed to standing beside these communities and reaching families with immediate support wherever possible.
