MUKTI Organises Technical Training on Scientific Backyard Poultry Management under the NIRMAN Project

As part of its ongoing efforts to promote sustainable livelihoods and strengthen rural income generation, MUKTI organized a Technical Training on Scientific Backyard Poultry Management under the NIRMAN Project, supported by Canara Bank, at Uttar Jharmatiali, Lataguri. The training was conducted by Ramsai Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Jalpaiguri, with the objective of equipping community members with the technical knowledge and practical skills required for successful backyard poultry farming.

The programme witnessed the participation of approximately 65 individuals, including 62 community members, MUKTI Self-Help Group (SHG) leaders and members, and representatives of the project’s Core Committee. The enthusiastic participation reflected the community’s growing interest in adopting scientific poultry rearing as a sustainable livelihood opportunity.

The technical sessions were facilitated by experts from Ramsai Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Jalpaiguri, who provided comprehensive guidance on the scientific management of backyard poultry. The training covered key aspects of poultry rearing, including brooding techniques, balanced feeding practices, vaccination schedules, disease prevention, biosecurity measures, and basic poultry healthcare management. The resource persons combined technical knowledge with practical demonstrations and interactive discussions, enabling participants to gain a clear understanding of best practices for maintaining healthy and productive poultry.

The training was organized in preparation for the upcoming chick distribution programme under the NIRMAN Project, ensuring that beneficiaries are well prepared before receiving chicks. By building their technical capacity in advance, the programme aims to improve survival rates, enhance productivity, and support the long-term success of backyard poultry enterprises.

During the sessions, participants actively engaged with the resource persons, raising questions about poultry management, disease control, feeding practices, and common challenges faced by small-scale poultry rearers. The interactive discussions helped clarify practical concerns and strengthened participants’ confidence in adopting scientific methods for poultry farming.

The resource persons also highlighted the wider socio-economic benefits of scientific backyard poultry farming. They explained how improved poultry management can enhance household income, create sustainable livelihood opportunities, and contribute to better nutritional security by ensuring regular access to eggs and poultry products. Such livelihood interventions, they noted, play an important role in strengthening rural economies while improving the overall well-being of farming households.

Expressing their commitment to the initiative, the experts from Ramsai Krishi Vigyan Kendra assured participants and MUKTI of their continued technical support and guidance whenever required. Their collaboration will help ensure the effective implementation and long-term sustainability of the backyard poultry component under the NIRMAN Project.

The training concluded with active participation and positive feedback from the attendees, who expressed confidence in applying the scientific techniques they had learned. By strengthening technical knowledge and practical preparedness, the programme has laid a strong foundation for the successful implementation of the backyard poultry initiative, empowering rural communities with sustainable livelihood opportunities and contributing to improved income, food security, and self-reliance.
