Mukti Urban Project Organises Child Safeguarding Awareness Camp in Ward 25

As the Nodal Agency for the Ward Level Child Protection Committee (WLCPC), the Mukti Urban Project organized a Child Safeguarding Awareness Camp at Tribeni Sangha Club, Ward 25, Kolkata, in collaboration with the District Child Protection Unit (DCPU). The programme brought together 46 caregivers, children, and youth with the objective of strengthening community awareness on child protection and promoting a safe and supportive environment for every child.

The awareness session was facilitated by Ms. Sharmistha from the District Child Protection Unit, who led an interactive discussion on a range of critical child protection issues. The session covered topics such as child abuse, child marriage, bullying, child labour, child sexual abuse, substance abuse, and human trafficking, highlighting their causes, consequences, and the importance of early intervention and timely reporting.

The programme encouraged active participation from attendees, creating a platform for open dialogue and shared learning. Caregivers discussed the challenges they face in ensuring the safety and well-being of children, while children and young people actively participated in conversations on peer pressure, substance abuse, and making safe and informed choices. The interactive nature of the session enabled participants to better understand the risks affecting children and adolescents and the role that families and communities can play in preventing them.

Participants were also introduced to the various child protection mechanisms and support services available through the government. Information was shared about the Child Helpline (1098), the role of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) in protecting children in need of care and protection, and the counselling, referral, and rehabilitation services provided by the District Child Protection Unit. The resource persons encouraged participants to seek timely support whenever they encounter situations involving child abuse, neglect, exploitation, or any other form of violence against children.

The awareness camp significantly enhanced participants’ understanding of children’s rights, safeguarding practices, and the importance of collective responsibility in protecting children from harm. It also strengthened awareness of the legal and institutional mechanisms available to ensure children’s safety and well-being.

Through initiatives such as this, the Mukti Urban Project continues to reinforce its commitment as the Nodal Agency for the Ward Level Child Protection Committee, working closely with government departments, community members, and local stakeholders to build child-friendly communities where every child can grow up in a safe, secure, and nurturing environment.
