Mukti has successfully completed the baseline assessment for Suraksha Songlap, a 12-month, school-based initiative being implemented in collaboration with the Mukti Switzerland Chapter to promote adolescent safety, gender equality, and stronger safeguarding systems in Jhargram district, West Bengal.
The project aims to create safe, inclusive, and supportive school environments by equipping adolescent girls and boys with knowledge about their rights, consent, respectful relationships, and safeguarding mechanisms. At the same time, it seeks to strengthen the responsiveness of government schools and community-based safeguarding institutions through improved coordination, stakeholder engagement, and collective action.
The baseline assessment forms a key component of the project’s monitoring and evaluation framework. It is designed to understand adolescents’ existing knowledge, attitudes, perceptions, confidence, and help-seeking behaviour related to personal safety, gender norms, and child protection. The insights gathered will serve as benchmark data, guiding programme implementation while enabling the project team to measure progress throughout the intervention and during the endline evaluation.
The assessment commenced on 8 July 2026 and was carried out across all three participating schools in Jhargram district – Banpukhuria Mukti Support School (MSS), Ranarani Mukti Support School (MSS), and Manikpara Mukti Support School (MSS). Students actively participated in the assessment, which was conducted in a safe, confidential, and participatory environment with the support of school authorities and Mukti’s project facilitators. The process encouraged adolescents to share their perspectives openly, ensuring that their voices will help shape the project’s implementation.
With the completion of the baseline assessment across all three schools, the project team will now consolidate and analyse the findings to establish programme benchmarks. These insights will inform the design and delivery of structured learning sessions, stakeholder engagement activities, adaptive programme management, and future monitoring and evaluation.
The successful completion of the baseline assessment marks an important milestone in the inception phase of Suraksha Songlap. As the project moves forward, the evidence generated through this exercise will help ensure that interventions are responsive to the needs of adolescents and their school communities. Through this initiative, Mukti remains committed to fostering safe, gender-responsive, and inclusive learning environments where young people are empowered with the knowledge, confidence, and support they need to thrive.
