Cancer is not only a devastating disease but also one of the most expensive to treat, placing a significant economic burden on patients and their families. While the rising incidence of cancer is alarming, the financial strain it causes is equally concerning. Yet, many cases can be successfully treated if detected early. Early diagnosis and proper treatment are crucial for effective cancer management. Unfortunately, awareness about cancer, particularly in remote areas, remains low, highlighting the urgent need for health education and sensitization on this critical issue.
Recognizing the importance of awareness and early detection, Mukti organized a cancer awareness and diagnosis camp in collaboration with the “Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Cancer Institute,” supported by Kolkata Foundation, on August 8th, 2024, at the Mukti Gram Clinic in Nagendrapur GP, South 24 Parganas district. This initiative aimed to address the needs of underprivileged cancer patients who lack access to affordable treatment and to raise mass awareness about the disease.
The event was facilitated by distinguished oncologist Dr. Anindo Sen and his team. The Netaji Subhas Bose Cancer Institute, run by the Himadri Memorial Cancer Welfare Trust, provides extremely affordable or free care to underprivileged cancer patients through various government and CSR funds, as well as the Swastha Sathi card.
During the camp, 24 medical health workers from Swastho Shongini and clinic medical support staff, along with 25 community members suspected of having cancer, received comprehensive education on breast and oral cancer. After thorough examinations, Dr. Sen referred four local women to the Netaji Subhas Bose Cancer Institute for further testing, demonstrating the camp’s commitment to early detection and timely intervention.
The beneficiaries expressed deep gratitude and relief after the camp, as many had been living with fear and uncertainty about their health. The thorough examinations and the compassionate care they received from Dr. Anindo Sen and his team, provided them with a sense of hope. For those referred for further testing, the prospect of accessing affordable treatment at the Netaji Subhash Bose Cancer Institute was especially reassuring. The camp not only raised awareness but also empowered the community with knowledge, leaving them better equipped to manage their health.
