The Mangrove trees that Mukti planted last year after the severe cyclone Amphan have been decimated by Yaas again. This destruction leads to flood security decrease, soil threatened by erosion and biodiversity extinction. The restoration of the forest is needed on an immediate basis.
Mukti in association with “United Way India” aims to promote participatory management of the mangrove forest in the province of Bhubaneswari Island in Purba Sridharpur, to contribute to flood security and protection of the environment.
Bhubaneswari Island is located beside the river Moni and the stretch of the area is almost 1.5 acres. In 2020 over 40,000 mangroves were planted by Mukti on that island. Some of them died and some need the care to recover. New saplings have been planted in place of the dead ones. The area of the mangrove plantation site has been surrounded by a net of thread so that the cattle brought by the cattle keeper on the river bar for grazing cannot do any harm to the saplings and the trees.
26 women of Purba Sridharpur are engaged in the restoration process. They are working under “Food for Work” project. Mukti is supporting them by providing dry ration.
