Mukti in association with “OAK Foundation” has conducted 4 meetings under Amplifying Community Voices (ACV) program, 3rd session with adolescent girls and boys groups in Herembogopalpur GP, Sundarban. We have probably heard the rallying cry and support the sentiment in principle. But for most children and teens, the practice is dramatically different – especially for young people who are poor, undocumented or in mixed-status families, of color or hold other marginalized identities. Happily, Mukti is trying to lift up youth voices, by conducting awareness workshops for them.
18-22 participants have been present in each meeting.
The meetings have been conducted by using some tools to understand the characteristic flaws, qualities and personality traits of other people (good habits/ behaviour and bad behaviour/ habits) as well as knowing/understanding their own personalities during the process.
The participants have been asked to identify the people living around them on the basis of their liking and disliking. They are instructed to draw a picture of why those people they think are good or bad. While identifying the people of their liking they have referred to their characteristics – speaks calmly, lives together like friends, speaks clearly and truthfully, helps in danger, loves without expectations, brave enough to encounter any danger, does not hate others, etc. The characteristics of the people they dislike are – fearful, abusive in nature, lies for everything, hate others, intoxicated, don’t help in danger, fights and quarrels with everybody, jokes about being disabled etc.
Then they are asked to draw the palms of their hands on a piece of paper and write down the five good and five bad qualities on the drawn fingers, within themselves that they want to change. After the activity they have been told to share their dreams – where do they like to reach (not only career and placement) in the future. Some want to be a photographer, some want to visit places of their choice, some want to build houses etc.
Through these activities, they have been taught which qualities in them can help them to fulfill their dreams and which faults can hinder them from fulfilling their dreams. For some faults or virtues, a man becomes good or bad to others or to themselves. But it can change in space, time or situation. For example, no human being is completely good or completely bad. Everyone acquires good or bad qualities. The participants are taught how to keep a balance between traits.
In this way, the whole session has been planned to help them understand other people and their own characteristics.
