Celebrating Aranya Saptaha with a Vision for Sustainable Livelihoods
On 29th June 2025, Mukti’s Lataguri Branch commemorated Aranya Saptaha with a meaningful and forward-looking initiative in Jharmatiali village, Jalpaiguri district, aimed at strengthening rural economies through green and sustainable practices.
In a major step toward promoting eco-friendly and income-generating cultivation, 2,100 high-yielding Areca nut saplings were distributed among 400 local families. The saplings, of the Mohitnagar species—a premium variety developed and endorsed by the Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (CPCRI), Mohitnagar—are ideally suited to the climatic conditions of North Bengal. This initiative is poised to offer a long-term economic boost to farmers in the region.
Expert Insights
The event was honoured by the presence of several notable dignitaries. Emphasis was given on the immense potential of mixed farming systems. It was recommended combining Areca nut cultivation with betel leaves, black pepper, and cocoa—an approach that could significantly multiply farmers’ income while also ensuring environmental sustainability.
Community, Culture, and Capacity Building
The celebration was enriched by cultural performances, poetry recitations, and an interactive community discussion reflecting the community’s connection with nature and shared aspirations for development.
A special highlight of the day was the inauguration of Mukti’s local office—a beautiful, eco-conscious bamboo structure handcrafted by local artisans, symbolizing the fusion of tradition and modern vision.
Smart Agriculture Training for FPO Members
As part of the same initiative, a hands-on training session on Smart Agriculture was organized for Farmer Producer Organization (FPO) members. The session focused on climate-resilient farming, sustainable agricultural practices, and effective crop diversification, equipping participants with practical tools for long-term growth.
Together, we are sowing the seeds of resilience, innovation, and community empowerment. MUKTI remains committed to bridging traditional wisdom with modern practices to cultivate a greener, self-reliant future.
