Most of the indigenous population in the Sundarbans – earliest settlers among the five million-odd people who live in the deltaic archipelago of the world’s largest mangrove forest – lost their homes to Cyclone Amphan on May 20. The people of Sunderban paid a heavy price for this.
The storm damaged almost all the mud houses extensively by blowing away the roof and breaking the wall. People are living road side or on the river embankments.
Mukti in association with “CIA” (Cairns Indian Association) designed a home loan plan for the vulnerable who has lost their homes due to Amphan. Women of SHG (Self Help Group) of Purbasridharpur and Kankandighi under Nagendrapur Gram Panchayat and Mathurapur Block II, are given an opportunity to rebuild their houses through a zero interest scheme of Rs. 10,000 to each which they will have to repay in 1 year. So they have to refund only the principal and there is no interest.
25 women of Mukti SHG from Model village (Purbasridharpur), 10 from Nagendrapur Gram Panchayat and 15 from Kankandighi were given the home loans. Rs. 5,00,000 is planned for 50 women SHG members.
