The Mukti Child Project, with the support of Mukti Community Development Fund (MCDF)—an integral wing of Mukti—organized a series of caregivers’ meetings across multiple areas of Jorasanko to strengthen financial awareness and collective action among families.
The Self-Help Group (SHG) concept has been successfully implemented within Mukti’s community development initiatives. Encouraged by this success, the Mukti Child Project has begun efforts to adapt the SHG model within its urban child project setup as a step towards sustainable development and stronger caregiver engagement.
Implementing SHGs in an urban context is challenging, as many caregivers do not have fixed addresses, live in rented and movable households, and face instability that affects regular participation. Despite these challenges, the Mukti Child Project is making consistent efforts to introduce this concept among the caregivers of sponsored children, keeping long-term sustainability at the centre.
In the future, the project plans to expand this initiative to include other caregivers from the community, whether they are part of the sponsorship programme or not. With the experience, technical guidance, and continuous support of MCDF, caregivers are being oriented on collective savings, shared responsibility, and alternatives to high-interest loans from informal sources.
This initiative reflects how a proven model from one wing of Mukti is being carefully adapted by another to promote caregiver development, active engagement, and sustainable community growth within a challenging urban setting.
