Menstruation is a natural and healthy biological process for girls, yet it is often shrouded in stigma, taboos, and myths that make it difficult to discuss openly. These cultural barriers prevent adolescent girls from accessing essential information about menstruation and developing healthy habits. It is crucial to educate girls about the science of menstruation to help prevent pelvic inflammatory diseases, infections, and to dispel the myths and taboos surrounding this vital aspect of their health.
In response to this need, Mukti, in collaboration with “Children International” and Project HOPE, organized a Menstrual Health & Hygiene Workshop for girls aged 10 to 14 at Narkeldanga, Kolkata which commenced on August 18, 2024. The primary objective of this workshop is to empower girls with critical knowledge and skills related to menstruation and personal hygiene while challenging and breaking down the barriers of stigma, silence, and misinformation that often surround this topic.
The workshop began with an introduction and interactive activities aimed at creating a comfortable and supportive learning environment. Participants explored essential topics such as puberty, the menstrual cycle, and proper nutrition through engaging discussions, educational videos, and collaborative group work.
The training also featured practical demonstrations on the correct use and disposal of sanitary pads, emphasizing key hygiene practices, and providing clear guidance on dos and don’ts.
This initiative aims to reach 1,100 girls, with 370 already having benefited from the training. Each participant receives a branded pack of 12 XL sanitary napkins, ensuring they are well-equipped to manage their periods hygienically. The distribution of sanitary napkins will continue until December, with follow-up sessions planned to reinforce the knowledge and practices introduced during the workshop.
