Mukti-KPMG: Sustainable Eco-Livelihood Drive

Mukti, in collaboration with KPMG, launched a project called Mukti Green Defense System in Sundarbans (MGDS) which is a comprehensive solution to combat river embankment erosion in the Kankandighi and Nagendrapur Gram Panchayat region of Sundarbans. This solution outlines a holistic approach involving the plantation of four types of mangrove trees near the riverside, coupled with the strategic cultivation of dragon fruit, coconut trees, and other fruit-bearing trees on the river embankment along with Napier grass which serve as a valuable source of cattle fodder.

The main goal is to tackle various environmental and livelihood challenges linked to safeguarding riverbanks, preventing soil erosion, reducing pollution, preserving the ecosystem, enhancing aesthetics, supporting cattle, and providing livelihood assistance to the MCDF members.

As part of the project, 1,400 Dragon saplings were planted along a 2.5 km stretch of the River Thakuran’s embankment. Additionally, 6,000 Nepiar grasses were planted across a 2 km area, covering Baradnagar and Purba Sridharpur in Nagendrapur GP. Around 3,000 Mangrove trees, including Gora and Geyoya species, were planted on roughly one acre of land at Purba Jata Narayanipur, within the bio-village. Moreover, approximately 45,000 fruit, flower, and spice saplings were planted along the roads of Purba Jata and Paschim Jata in the bio-village. Out of these, 300 saplings were distributed among 20 farmers in the bio-village, with each farmer receiving 15 saplings to nurture.
