Prof. Pradeep Ray: A Guiding Life That Touched Many

Prof. Pradeep Ray: A Guiding Life That Touched Many

There are some people in life whose presence leaves an indelible mark on our hearts, shaping our journey in ways we never expected. Prof. Pradeep Ray was one such person—a mentor, a guide, a visionary, and above all, a compassionate soul dedicated to the service of humanity. His sudden departure has left an irreplaceable void, yet his teachings and his unwavering dedication will continue to inspire us for years to come.

My association with Mukti began in an unfamiliar state, Prof. Pradeep Ray amidst unfamiliar faces, but the warmth and encouragement I received from the senior management and colleagues made me feel at home. Among them, Prof. Pradeep Ray stood out. I still vividly remember my first conversation with him—right after speaking with Mr. Sankar Halder (Our Founder – President), I got a call from Prof. Ray. At that time, I was in Dehradun, navigating through the uncertainties of the COVID-19 pandemic while Mukti was engaged in the Amphan relief work. Despite all odds, he made sure that I felt comfortable. We exchanged a brief introduction, and then he patiently explained Mukti’s vision and mission, discussing how we could leverage fundraising opportunities from abroad. That conversation lasted nearly two and a half hours, yet not for a moment did I feel like an outsider. He had the rare ability to make people feel valued and included from the very first interaction.

From that day onward, he became a mentor, a father figure, and a friend. He would often call me ‘beta’—a term that meant more to me than mere words. We collaborated on numerous projects, exchanging insights through WhatsApp groups and emails. No matter where in the world he was traveling, he always found time to guide me. He connected me with the right people, sharing their email IDs and resources. His enthusiasm for Mukti’s work was boundless, and his commitment towards the people of West Bengal was unwavering.

Mukti flourished under his guidance. As an extended board member, he posed questions that were not just relevant but visionary at the same time. He always pushed us to think beyond the present, to innovate, and to serve people in better ways. He never hesitated to go the extra mile, working tirelessly beyond his time and responsibilities to uplift the organization and the communities we serve.

Two years ago, right after our Foundation Day Celebration, he congratulated me for being the best employee that year and in flow of the conversation I shared my interest in writing books and chapters, and he listened silently. A few months later, he invited me to contribute a chapter to one of his books. I was elated. Throughout the writing process, he guided me with patience and wisdom, teaching me how to structure an outline and refine my work. When the book was finally published, he congratulated me warmly, saying, ‘You made it.’ That moment was priceless. He instilled in me the belief that we could achieve so much more for humanity in the years to come.

But fate had other plans. On January 11-12, 2025, we met at Diamond Harbour, where Prof. Pradeep Ray introduced me to his beloved wife, and I, in turn, introduced him to my newborn child. It was a moment of pure joy. He and Mam shared invaluable advice on parenting, on raising a happy child, and on the duties and responsibilities which are crucial for good parenting.

It was a heartfelt conversation, one that I will cherish forever.

A month later, I invited him to attend our upcoming board meeting. Prof. Pradeep Ray graciously accepted. But just a few days after that meeting, I received the devastating news of his passing. It felt as if I had lost not just a mentor, but a father, a friend, and a guiding light. The pain of his absence is immeasurable.

Though Prof. Pradeep Ray is no longer with us in person, his wisdom, his kindness, and his relentless spirit will always remain a part of Mukti and of those he touched. His legacy will continue to inspire us as we strive to carry forward his vision and dedication toward the betterment of society.

Prof. Pradeep Ray

Rest in peace, dear Prof. Ray. Your teachings, your love, and your unwavering commitment to humanity will forever guide us.
