Due to stigma and fear, villagers of Damkal abandoned the deceased Covid patient body. They refused to conduct the last rites of the patient and ostracized the family members. It was just after three days when the village was swept away by the flood caused by the severe cyclone Yaas. In this scenario, Mukti stepped in to support the family, irrespective of religion.
On 29th May, when Mr. Ebad Ali Molla (aged 45) passed away due to coronavirus at his home at Damkal under Nagendrapur Gram Panchayat, the family didn’t found anyone to conduct the funeral rites of him. He left behind his wife, son and daughter. After hearing about the helpless family Mukti local volunteers at once stepped into the situation. They reached the family by breaching the flood water, moved the body to the village cemetery and conducted the funeral rites as per his religion.
Two days later Mukti volunteers came to know that the family is starving as their neighbors had restricted their movements. Again the good Samaritans of Mukti served the family with dry ration which contained rice, lentil, salt, oil, potato, onion and mask.
His wife said “When my husband was deceased neither the neighbors nor the villagers stand by my side. No one helped us to conduct the funeral rites of my husband. I was all alone with my children. The villagers abandoned us. We were passing our days in dire poverty. In our hard times only Mukti volunteers came for our help. They not only supported us to conduct the funeral rites but we also received dry ration from them. I am grateful to Mukti.”
Mukti volunteers will always stand beside the vulnerable who are in need of help and will do the best of humanity to overcome all crises.
