Success Story of Ujjal Mondal under TSS Programme

Ujjal Mondal, Mukti’s alumnus student of Talented Student Sponsorship Programme of the year 2014, made Mukti proud. The student hails from a small village named Tulsighata of Jaynagar, South 24 pgs. Ujjal was brought up in a family consisting of his father, mother and a younger sister. Both the children had visual impairment since birth, causing great concern for the parents. Ujjal’s father, being a hawker and the sole bread earner in the family, had been through severe challenges in arranging education expenses for the children. Ujjal was a bright student since childhood. But after passing Higher Secondary, he was very apprehensive about being able to continue higher studies as his sister was still in school and it was not possible for his father to arrange the expenses for both of them.

Ujjal got a chance to pursue Bengali Honours from Jadavpur University. It was a difficult situation for the family as he was very keen not to let go of this chance while the expenses on his lodging and studies were increasing. His parents still managed some amount from relatives and encouraged him to complete his graduation.

Ujjal never looked back after this. He got a chance to pursue M.A. in Bengali at the same University when he met Prof. Tarun Naskar whoknew Ujjal as a brilliant student. After knowing about his family background and financial constraints, he was very moved, and referred the student to MUKTI for the Talented Student Sponsorship (TSS).

Since 2012 to 2014, Ujjal received sponsorship from JU Alumni Sydney and Mr. Pravin Gupta while he was studying M.A. He successfully completed his course and thereafter did B.Ed.

Ujjal from the very beginning had been consistently following the recruitment notices. Though he was not very eager to take up a job, yet his family conditions had forced him to take a decision on this. In the year 2016, he came to know about the special recruitment for the handicapped and appeared for a written test for a clerical position in South Eastern Railway. He got through and since 21^st December 2016, is posted in Garden Reach Office of South Eastern Railway as a clerk. 

Ujjal still believes that this is not the end. He wishes to pursue Ph.D., and dreams of teaching and mentoring students from poor financial backgrounds. He says, ‘Let me accumulate some money for my family first. My sister is studying for graduation. My parents need to be taken care of. After some time, I will prepare for Ph.D., and once I get the job of a lecturer, I will pursue it. I am not fitting into the job of a clerk’.
