Mukti, an organization committed to fostering a safer and more supportive environment for women, stands resolute against the alarming incidents plaguing our nation today. In these challenging times, we remain united in our mission to empower women by advocating for their rights, promoting self-defense, and ensuring a secure environment for all.
In support of this mission, on August 23, 2024, Mukti organized a silent rally in Raidighi to protest the brutal rape and murder at RG Kar Medical College on August 9. Over 1,700 community members and Mukti Sathis participated, with women marching resolutely, their faces covered with black masks, holding placards of protest. Men, young and old, joined them in solidarity. The rally ended with a candlelight vigil in memory of Tilottama, the young doctor and victim.
The rally aimed to highlight Mukti’s concerns about gender inequality, gender-based violence, and the pervasive culture of victim-blaming. It also called out the deep-rooted impact of patriarchy, systemic corruption, delays in investigating the RG Kar incident, and the need for improved safety and equal opportunities for women in the workplace, especially for those working at night.
The rally demonstrated strong community solidarity and highlighted the urgent need for safer environments and equal opportunities for women. The powerful imagery of women marching with black masks and the candlelight vigil for the victim underscored the collective grief and demand for justice. The rally not only raised awareness but also reinforced Mukti’s commitment to advocating for women’s rights and challenging societal norms that perpetuate violence and discrimination.
