Seed Distribution Program by Mukti at Nagendrapur Gram Panchayat

Sunderban suffered widespread damage as cyclone Amphan pumped gale wind reaching 185 km/ph and heavy rains into the district as it made its way towards Bangladesh coast on Wednesday 20^th May, 20. Paddy and green gram crops that had been harvested and stocked by farmers were completely damaged in the heavy rains. People living just beside the rivers (the tribal population) had nowhere to go. Amphan had snatched away the means of livelihood from them.

These people are basically tribes, lives outside the river embankment and they are landless. The soil around the river edges is salty and no vegetables can grow there. Male members of these areas are migrant workers. For about 2-3 years Mukti is helping these families by providing them vegetable seeds which they plant in jute sack, bucket and tub. Mukti also provided them fresh soil. Mukti used to distribute seasonal seeds which can grow in rainy and winter seasons.

After Amphan these families are in a grave situation. They have neither shelter nor money to buy foods. As Monsoon is approaching Mukti provided them seeds that can easily grow in rainy season. 300 families from 4 villages Purba Sridharpur, Nagendrapur, Domkal, Dakshin (South) Kankandighi and Paschim (West) Jota were provided 10-12 types of vegetable seeds. Some of these seeds are of Amaranth (Note shaak), Red Amaranth (Lal Shaak), Kalmi Amaranth (Kalmi Shaak), “Dhudhul”, Snake Gourd (Chichinga), Pumpkin, Okra, Bottle Gourd ( Lau), Board Beans (Sheem) etc.
