Cyclone AMPHAN left a trail of devastation in its wake over the South 24 Parganas and North 24 Parganas districts: A storm surge of over 13-14ft swept through large parts of these districts and sea water inundated the land. River embankments across the Sunderbans and low-lying districts were swept away, sweet water ponds salinated, houses and crops destroyed. As more of the Sunderbans is turned into arable land, mangrove density declines putting people subject to greater risks.

Breaking of embankments caused salt water pouring onto the land, which will have the most durable impact on livelihoods. Saline water kills freshwater fish in ponds in a day, most sources of drinking water disappear, and land can’t be used for cultivation for up to five years.
3 ponds at Nagendrapur village under Nagendrapur Gram Panchayat and Raidighi Police Station, are used as community water reservoir for the villagers. Villagers used these ponds water for regular household work, drinking water for the cattle and for bathing. Increase salinity has turned the water unusable for them. These three ponds belong to Mr. Uday Purkait, Mr. Ananda Mondal and Mr. Abdur Rahaman Gagi. Total 25 families regularly use the water of these ponds.

Mukti has taken an initiative to clean the ponds and refill them by clean water. Mukti is providing petrol and diesel to keep the pumps engaged. It will not only help those families but also it will restore the natural eco system of the ponds.
