On April 22nd, the Mukti Support Schools (MSS) joined hands with children and teachers to commemorate World Earth Day, emphasizing the theme of ‘Planet vs Plastics’ for 2024. Recognizing the urgent need to address the global plastic crisis, educators shed light on the alarming environmental repercussions stemming from excessive plastic usage, while also delving into the broader issues of air and water pollution.
Students engaged in an enlightening awareness session through art, capturing their concerns and aspirations on paper with poignant drawings. These illustrations transformed into vibrant posters, and adorned the walls of MSS centers, serving as visual reminders to the community about the pressing need for environmental stewardship.
Transitioning from awareness to action, the initiative “Each One Plants One” kicked off on April 23rd, spearheaded by both students and teachers. With guidance from educators, saplings, resilient enough to withstand challenging conditions, were carefully selected and nurtured, symbolizing hope for a greener tomorrow. These young plants, sheltered in makeshift pots or repurposed plastic bags, await their eventual transplantation into the welcoming earth during the forthcoming monsoon season.
Meanwhile, the “Earthian Priavaran” group at Kalyani University orchestrated a drawing competition, drawing participants from MSS. Several budding artists showcased their talent, contributing their artwork to the cause. Their creations, aligned with the competition guidelines, were proudly displayed on the group’s website, amplifying the message of environmental consciousness to a broader audience.
Beyond the school gates, the Mukti Village Office staff, along with members of the Mukti Community Development Fund (MCDF), rallied together in support of environmental conservation efforts. Under the banners of “Mukti Green Defense in Sundarban,” supported by KPMG, and “Sundarban Greens,” supported by Sun-G, a joint initiative took root in Mukti Gram, Purba Sridharpur. Here, a diverse array of 70-80 flower and fruit saplings, representing six species, found their new home, symbolizing a collective commitment to nurturing nature. Alongside the plantation drive, enlightening awareness sessions and engaging group discussions further underscored the importance of sustainable living practices.
In total, 22 dedicated individuals participated in this multifaceted event, exemplifying the power of collective action in safeguarding our planet for future generations.
