“Everything was destroyed by Cyclone Remal. We are barely managing under a tarpaulin for shelter. I hope to return to school soon and see my friends again,” said Rumana Piyad, a Class VIII student from Uttar Kankandighi MSS, after the devastation.
Standing inside their broken bedroom, Asim Banik, a student from Jogendrapur MSS, said, “The cyclone took away our roof and everything we had. I feel scared, but the teachers at Mukti Support School are helping us feel safe.”
Cyclone Remal has left a trail of destruction in the Sundarbans, severely impacting the students of Mukti Support School. Many students have lost their homes and essential belongings, disrupting their education and daily lives.
300 students and their families are suffering as Cyclone Remal completely destroyed their homes. 5 MSS centers were damaged, with significant destruction evident in the Basanti and Canning blocks of the South 24 Parganas district and the Egra block of the Purba Medinipur district.
In response, Mukti is going to launch an emergency relief initiative to support these young learners. The organization is providing temporary shelter, food, and psychological support to help them cope with the trauma. Additionally, Mukti is working to restore the damaged school infrastructure to ensure a swift return to normalcy. The collective efforts aim to rebuild the community and secure a brighter future for the affected children.
