Innovation and Sustainability

01. Attempts towards developing climate resilient ecosystem

Mukti is committed to nurturing, strengthening, and sustaining the river embankment system of the Sundarbans region. The organization not only bolsters the river bank system but also generates alternative livelihood opportunities for the Self-Help Group (SHG) members. Engaging SHG women in this initiative, they plant Mangrove and Vetiver Grass as well as Dragon fruits at the riverbank. In the construction of river embankments using soil cutting machines, provisions are made for solid compression. Vetiver grass is planted along the embankment’s slope, while two lines of Geonwa, a variety of mangrove trees, are cultivated at the bottom portion where tidal water reaches. In addition, the riverbank is enriched with dragon fruit plants and coconut trees, further augmenting the region’s climate resilience and offering additional income sources for the community

02. Ecological Restoration

Ecological restoration process involves assisting the recovery of an ecosystem that has been degraded, damaged, or destroyed. It involves returning an ecosystem as closely as possible to its original state before it was disturbed, enhancing its capacity for self-renewal and enabling it to sustain biodiversity. Mukti’s approach to ecological restoration is centered on developing a village to a model village which has been degraded due to environmental and human factors. By involving the local community, particularly Self-Help Group (SHG) members. The restoration includes reforestation, reintroducing native species, pond rejuvenation, constructing green belts, rehabilitating degraded lands and waters, and promoting organic living through beautification efforts. These innovative strategies not only prevent erosion and foster local wildlife habitats but also ensure sustainability by educating the community about these practices. Through this approach we are also building community resilience and adaptation to climate change.

03. Cyclone & Flood Tolerant Environment

Drawing from its extensive experience in dealing with natural calamities, MUKTI had forged a path towards resilience against nature’s fury. The cornerstone of their novel approach lay in the creation of Cyclone and Flood resilient houses—a potent antidote to the perennial scourge of cyclones that plagued the coastal region of Sundarbans, West Bengal. Illuminated by the harsh lessons of the past, MUKTI decided to construct low-cost cyclone & flood resilient houses on a prototype basis, aiming to protect the underprivileged population of Sundarbans during natural disasters and generate an alternative livelihood for them.Fully cognizant of these complexities, MUKTI engaged the expertise of a seasoned architect. Their task was to craft a low-cost prototype of a Cyclone and Flood resilient house, a project with the noble aim of shielding the most vulnerable sections of society from nature’s capricious wrath. Through this pioneering endeavor, MUKTI aspired to empower these communities, bestowing upon them not just a haven from the storm, but the tools to weather it and emerge stronger.

04. Impact created Since inception

MUKTI, a non-profit socio-economic organization is working in the Delta region of Sundarbans (world UNESCO Heritage site) and more than 10 other districts of West Bengal since 2003 creating impact for more than 10 lakh beneficiaries covering about 1.5 lakhs households including 31,000 SHG women and 4500 children. The organization mission is to work as a HEALER- AID for our society in the area of Health Water & Sanitation, Education and Enrichment, Agriculture Reforms, Livelihood & Enablement, Environment & Resilience, Rights & Special needs, Awareness & Empowerment, Integrated Development and Disaster Recovery irrespective of caste, creed, age and gender.

05. Future Plan

To assess carbon footprint, develop a sustainability strategy, implement renewable energy and sustainable practices, and track progress towards net-zero emissions.Establishing MUKTI CARES (Climate Adaptation and Research Ecosystems Solutions) sundarbans to conduct research, advocate for policies, and provide comprehensive support in programmes of the organizationRaise awareness, deliver educational programs, and engage with schools and community organizations to empower communities in climate change mitigation and adaptation. To allocate resources, collaborate with institutions, and promote innovative solutions for climate change To mitigate climate-induced migration, which is caused by the detrimental effects of climate change such as rising sea levels, intensified natural disasters, and environmental degradation.Mukti Integrated Livelihood Development (MILD) Model which provides a holistic approach to income generation, where each activity is linked to others and requires minimal effort to earn a substantial income at the doorstep.Mukti Green Defence System (MDGS) is a comprehensive solution to combat river embankment erosion in the Sundarbans region. This solution outlines a holistic approach involving the plantation of different types of mangrove, dragon fruit, coconut trees, and along with Napier grass.

Mukti Community Business

Mukti Community Businesses is an initiative of Mukti that aims at fostering local entrepreneurship and promoting sustainable economic growth. In the Community business unit the community will own the sustainable businesses which will create products and services without compromising its quality with optimum cost. Recognizing that small businesses form the backbone of any thriving community, Mukti aims to provide support and resources to these vital enterprises. By doing so we empower individuals, foster creativity and innovation, and contribute to the local economy’s resilience. This initiative is necessary because it directly addresses the challenges of economic inequality and underdevelopment. Mukti Community Businesses not only create opportunities but also help in the redistribution of wealth and the provision of essential services to underserved areas of West Bengal.
