World Environment Day, celebrated annually on June 5th, is a United Nations initiative aimed at fostering worldwide awareness and action to protect our environment. The theme for World Environment Day 2024 is “Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience.” This year, Mukti continued its tradition of enthusiastic participation, engaging various community groups and schools in a series of impactful activities.
At the Mukti Kishalaya Support School (MKSS), 24 centers participated, with students from classes I to IV planting a variety of species such as Arjun, Shimul, Palash, Neem, and Banyan to enhance storm protection and maximize oxygen supply. Teachers guided the students in this plantation effort, followed by an awareness session on global warming. A drawing competition themed “Save Trees, Save Lives” (Gach lagan pran bachan) further engaged the young minds.
Mukti Support School (MSS) saw participation from 74 centers, where students engaged in tree plantation, rallies, drawing competitions, essay writing, and door-to-door awareness surveys. Drawing competition topics ranged from environmental pollution for classes I to IV, drought for classes V and VI, to social forestry for classes VII and VIII. Essay writing for classes IX and X focused on land erosion and reclamation. Additionally, a door-to-door awareness survey tackled the issues of plastic ban and water pollution. The community cleanup drive, involving students, volunteers, and local residents, effectively removed plastic waste and other pollutants from the neighborhood.
The adolescents involved in Amplifying Community Voices (ACV) conducted a tree plantation drive in Heramba Gopalpur GP, planting over 400 saplings. Preceding the plantation, an awareness program on climate change and child rights violations was held, with local teachers and Panchayat members motivating the adolescents.
In Mukti Gram Purba Sridharpur, 37 women from the “Mukti Sathi” group planted 1,700 mangroves and 720 flower saplings along the roadsides. Through these diverse and coordinated activities, Mukti not only celebrated World Environment Day but also reinforced its commitment to environmental conservation and community empowerment.
