The coastal area of the Sunderbans has been severely hit by the cyclone Amphan. Thousands of houses in the coastal areas were damaged in the overnight storm on Wednesday 20th May, 20. Thousands of trees have been destroyed. Heavy rains and strong tidal waves have broken the embankments in many places and submerged croplands and fish ponds in different areas. The communication system has been shut down due to big uprooted trees on the road. The entire Sunderbans coast has been turned into a devastated area after Amphan.

The Sunderban is a part of the tidally active delta where the land building process is incomplete till date. Numerous interlacing channels, intervening islands with the elevation of less than three meters above mean sea level and dense mangrove forests have given this littoral tract a distinctive geographical identity. So, the Sunderban region is extremely vulnerable due to its location, topography, climate and hydrology and each cyclone is a great threat for the people living in Sunderban.
Increased water salinity will alter the aquatic ecosystem and the mangrove forest, along with significant shortages of water for drinking and irrigation in the south-west coastal area, while soil salination is likely to lead to a significant decline in the output of high-yielding rice.

For the peoples survival it’s needed to repair the embankments, damaged by Amphan, immediately. But the fact is it is a laborious and time consuming task. The riverside slope of the embankment will be covered with polypropylene sheets and then soil. 1000 workers of Shridharnagar Gram Panchayat are being engaged to fulfill the task under Mukti’s “Food for Work” project. They are collecting mud from nearby lands and filling the damage. Mukti is providing them grocery items and Rs. 100/- per worker. Along with West Bengal’s NRGS project it’s a joint venture of Mukti.
