The Sunderbans mangrove forest was severely damaged after cyclones Yass and Amphan in West Bengal. Now, Mukti is planning to plant more than 1lakh mangroves across the Sundarbans to compensate for the damage caused by the natural calamities. The damage was particularly high in coastal and riverside areas.
As part of the plantation drive, which Mukti initiated on 26th July 2021 on the occasion of “International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem”, 4-5 species of mangrove seedlings (Kakra, Goran, Gorzon, etc) on a 1-hectare land, is being cultivated in the Mukti nursery, beside river Thakuran, near Mukti library at Mukti Gram (Purba Sridharpur) under Nagendrapur GP and Mathurapur II Block. Later the saplings will be planted on 10 hectares of riverside land which has been allotted for the plantation of the saplings.
Mukti, and “United Way India” are fighting together to protect the ecosystem of the Sundarban with heart and soul. We sincerely thank “United Way India” for supporting us in the effort to save the Sundarbans.
20 villagers (16 women & 4 men) of Mukti Gram are engaged in the Mukti mangrove nursery. They are working under “Food for Work”.
For the conservation of the mangrove forest, Mukti has instructed the villagers to keep an eye on the trees after plantation so that they are not damaged.
In the future, numerous mangrove trees will be planted across the entire Sundarbans.
