Mukti aimed to plant 6,000 dragon fruit plants surrounding every electric pole at Mukti Gram. The plantation program started on 10th May, 2021. In Mukti Gram there are approximately 1,200 electric poles. Surrounding each pole Mukti is planting 3-4 Dragon fruit plants.
The climate condition in West Bengal is ideal for Dragon fruit plantation. Mukti is using the cutting stem from the mother plant for plantation. The plant grows about 3”-4” height. As it is a thronged plant, animals avoid doing any harm to the plant. It needs very little water to grow. The plant produces flower generally from May to August and fruit can be harvested 30-40 days after fruit sets. In general Dragon fruit is tolerant to major pests and diseases.
This attractive red and pink color fruit not only has economic value but also valued for its high antioxidant potential, vitamins and minerals content.
20 women from Mukti Gram are engaged in the plantation program under “Food for work” project.
