At present, scarcity of groundwater has become a major problem in the eight villages of Nagendrapur and Kankandighi Gram Panchayats of Sunderbans. The main reason appears to be that groundwater is being used up for Boro paddy cultivation. Paddy has emerged as a water-guzzling crop, consuming 45 to 88 percent higher groundwater than other crops. Further, there exist large-scale inefficiencies in groundwater use, both for paddy cultivation and tube wells.
To address this crisis, Mukti organized 5 awareness sessions for 250 villagers (including farmers) of Purba Sridharpur. They were advised to cultivate Mustard, Sunflower, Sesame, Mung and other vegetables as a more profitable alternative to rice cultivation. It is pertinent to mention that in 2022, around 190 new and old ponds have been renovated by Mukti, so farmers may not need to use groundwater for farming this year.
