In an effort to enhance teaching strategies and address common classroom challenges, Mukti conducted an impactful orientation session for the teachers of Mukti Support Schools on 18th October 2024 at Surendranagar Mukti Support School (MSS). The session saw the participation of 40 teachers from 11 MSS. The aim of the programme was to equip educators with practical solutions for creating a more inclusive, democratic, and engaging learning environment. A similar orientation was conducted in the Canning cluster at Moukhali on 29th October 2024, where 27 teachers from 6 MSS attended.
One of the primary topics discussed during the orientation was how to encourage student participation in the classroom. Teachers shared their experiences and concerns about students who remain disengaged during lessons. Various techniques were introduced to create an environment where students feel encouraged to contribute, regardless of their confidence levels. Teachers were also urged to provide positive reinforcement when students offer answers, to build their confidence.
A key challenge discussed was how to motivate introverted and hesitant students to take part in classroom discussions. Teachers were encouraged to create a culture of respect, where every opinion is valued. Another important aspect of the training was how to involve students in democratic ways in classroom activities. The teachers were suggested to promote student-centred learning methods. The idea was to create a classroom environment where students have a voice in their learning process, which can lead to higher engagement and responsibility.
Creating an inclusive learning environment that caters to the needs of every student was another focal point of the orientation. Teachers were reminded that every classroom is made up of diverse learners with different abilities and backgrounds. It is essential that teaching strategies are adapted to meet these varied needs.
A new method introduced in the orientation was circle time, a practice that encourages open, democratic discussion among students and fosters a sense of community. The aim was to create an atmosphere of equality, where students’ voices are heard, and they feel comfortable to share their thoughts and feelings.
Teachers left the session with a better understanding of how to create a more inclusive, engaging, and participatory learning environment. The strategies discussed in the orientation were aimed at not only addressing the immediate challenges faced by teachers but also empowering them to be more effective in their roles.
As Mukti continues its efforts to improve education, the hope is that these strategies will lead to more empowered students, stronger teacher-student relationships, and ultimately, better learning outcomes for every child.
