To restore the lost beauty of nature, destructed by the cyclone Yaas and to protect the environment Mukti has planted 1,000 dragon fruit plant saplings in the countryside of the river embankments in Mukti Gram.
Further to increase the number of the dragon fruit plants, Mukti on its own initiative started to propagate the plants through the cutting process in the Mukti nursery of “Mukti Saathi”, Mrs. Rina Baidya. 20,000 saplings will be created through the cutting process. 15 women are involved in the cutting and they will receive the benefits of “Food for Work”.
For propagation, they had trimmed the end and then plopped them into a pot filled with soil with plenty of sand. They had dug a hole in the middle of the pot and placed the cutting. Backfilled the soil and compressed it slightly to keep the cutting upright. It may take a few weeks for the plants to begin generating roots. New top growth is the indication of root growth. After 5-6 months these saplings will be mature enough for plantation.
Later Mukti will plant these saplings over all the river embankments of Sundarban.
Mrs. Baidya will take care and nurture the saplings till they are ready for plantation.
