Cyclone Amphan made landfall in the coasts of Sunderban, on 20 May 2020, causing heavy rain and tidal surges that caused huge devastation in the southern part of West Bengal. The houses that had been damaged in November 2019 by Aila had still not been repaired when Amphan once again uprooted the people of Sunderbans from their homes. Tens of thousands of homes have been destroyed in the wake of the cyclone. Mud embankments and dams in the Sunderban delta, a UNESCO site, were breached as the surge whipped up by the cyclone submerged several kilometers of the Island.
