Cyclone Remal damaged the vegetable farms in the Sundarbans, causing widespread destruction. Lush fields of Kharif crops and monsoon vegetables like tomatoes, eggplants, okra, and other vital crops were devastated by the intense winds and torrential rains. The saline water intrusion further compounded the damage, rendering the soil infertile and unsuitable for immediate replanting. The survey reveals that 35% of farmers, totaling 225,000 across 15 blocks, have been affected, with approximately 7,000 bighas of crops damaged. Farmers, who rely heavily on these crops for their livelihoods, faced substantial economic losses. The destruction not only disrupted the local food supply but also threatened the financial stability of entire communities, leaving them to grapple with the dual challenge of rebuilding their homes and restoring their agricultural productivity.
