MUKTI’s Urgent Appeal: Restoring Lives in Sikkim and Kalimpong

In the early hours of October 4, a sudden cloudburst wreaked havoc on the serene landscapes of Sikkim, leaving devastation in its wake. This unrelenting natural disaster took a toll on the lives of over a thousand individuals spanning four districts and even spilled over into parts of West Bengal. The affected regions included Rangpo in Sikkim and the neighboring Kalimpong district in West Bengal, both of which were brought to their knees by this calamity. The incessant downpours led to severe flooding, leaving various areas in Kalimpong, such as Teesta Bazar and Rangpo, in ruins. The banks of the Teesta River, particularly in places like Ghazaldoba, continue to face the looming threat of rising water levels. Roads have been washed away, structures reduced to rubble, and countless people find themselves without shelter.

It has now been a week since the initial deluge, yet the resilient inhabitants of Kalimpong, battered by the relentless fury of the flood, are steadfastly working to regain their footing on the challenging path to recovery.
