Cyclone Amphan has ravaged the farming sector in Sunderban and the loss incurred may create an all-time record.
Horticulture is the agriculture of plants, mainly for food, materials, comfort and beauty for decoration. Mukti appointed women to apply their knowledge, skills, and technologies to intensively grow plants for human food and non-food uses and for personal or social needs.
When Amphan shattered the hope Mukti came forward to rebuild it through “Food for Work” Project. Mukti has provided an opportunity to help women by appointing them in several gardens of Mukti where they are grafting plants and by doing so they are earning their livelihood. Mukti started this program with 20 women and now the number has grown up to 200.
MUKTI has 3 gardens (Library garden, SAM office garden and 2 Bigha garden) of its own at Nagendrapur Gram Panchayat and some of the gardens under model village. Total 3-3.5 acres land is used for horticulture. In these gardens, 200 women (in each garden 30- 35 women) are working to grow seedlings. MUKTI has appointed these women in these gardens where they are responsible to plant Patabahar, Shal, Akashmoni, Sishu, Ginger, Guava, Karamcha (Conkerberry), Kamranga (Star Fruit), Seasonal Flower and Fruits. They have planted around 200 types of seedlings. MUKTI has a large scale plantation program in which around 1 lakh 50 thousand (1, 50,000) seedlings will be nurtured and distributed to the villagers. Post that, these saplings will be sent to market for sell.
For plantations, there will be a huge demand of seedlings. Anticipating the same Mukti is acting at present to have a better future.
