A Flood Before Puja – Help in Rebuilding Kolkata's Heart
Just days before the most anticipated festival of the year, a devastating flood has submerged the city of Kolkata. The very streets that were soon to echo with the sounds of 'dhak' and the chants of 'Maa Durga' are now flowing with knee-deep water. This is not just a natural disaster; it's a profound setback for a city preparing to welcome its beloved goddess.
The Devastation: The heavy rainfall on September 23, 2025, has left behind a trail of destruction. In low-lying areas like Garia Kamdahari, Jodhpur Park, Kalighat, Dhakuria, and the Jorasanko Thakurbari area (one of our project locations), homes are flooded, and families, including children, are displaced and suffering. The floodwaters have not spared the artistry and devotion of countless artisans. Idols, which are the very essence of the festival, have been devastated, their meticulously crafted features washed away. The pandals, some of which were just days from completion, are damaged and completely submerged, turning spaces of joy into scenes of loss.
A Race Against Time:
The devastating floods have crippled Kolkata's infrastructure and profoundly impacted its most vulnerable residents, especially those in slum and low-lying areas.
Low-income families have been forced from their homes and are now in temporary shelters.
Waterlogged streets have become deadly, with multiple reports of electrocution.
Daily life has come to a standstill, leaving many struggling for food and work.
The flood has destroyed thousands of Durga Puja pandals, causing both cultural and economic harm.
Our Call to Action: We are launching this campaign to support the community in rebuilding what has been lost. Your contribution will help provide immediate relief to affected families and support the thousands of small hawkers—the phuchka-wallahs, balloon sellers, and toy merchants—who wait all year for this moment to earn their livelihood during Puja. Let's show that the spirit of Kolkata, like Maa Durga, can triumph over all adversity. Let's help bring the city back to its joyful, festive self.
